The most dangerous myth in executive health — and why the executives most at risk are the ones least likely to believe it applies to them.
When most executives think about kidney disease, they picture someone elderly, diabetic, perhaps with a history of chronic illness. They do not picture themselves. This is the most dangerous cognitive blind spot in executive health — and it is costing people their independence, their careers, and in some cases, their lives.
Here is what 15 years of clinical experience has taught me: kidney disease does not look like anything until it looks like everything. Kidney function can decline by 60 to 70 percent before a single symptom appears. By the time fatigue, swelling, or cognitive changes emerge, the damage is significant and the options for reversal are dramatically narrowed. The executives I have watched reach dialysis in their early 50s were not people who ignored their health. They were people whose health system never connected the dots.
